The Story of Brah
The True Story of Brah Records!
Brah Records is a record label curated and managed by the band Oneida (enemyhogs.com) and produced and overseen by our friends at Jagjaguwar. We put out music by people who are not trendy, who aren’t going to be the next big thing and who’s music touches us. Most of the people we work with are our friends first Ð a terrible idea we’ve been told but we’ll risk it.
So how the hell did the smart and sober people of Jagjaguwar turn the reigns of a label over to the drunken idiots who make up the band Oneida?
Papa Crazee, Fat Bobby and I were hanging out at Daddy’s in Brooklyn one late night lamenting the state of the record industry. Turns out that Crazee’s band Oakley Hall couldn’t find a label for their killer new record and our compatriots at Jagjaguwar had passed on it. We had another beer, and then another beer, and then we were outraged. We needed to call someone and make things right. It was 3am on a Thursday night. Bobby grabbed my cell phone and dialed up Chris Swanson, the part owner of Jagjaguwar with our gripes. Perhaps some strong words about Jagjaguwar’s poetry CD and other recent choices were passed to Swanson, perhaps we told him that they HAD to give us control of a record label in order to right some cosmic wrongs that had been loosed on the world. It was the only solution…
Cut to the next morning, Kid Millions crawling into work, turning on his computer, checking his email and discovering a clearly drawn up label proposal from the other half of Jagjaguawar Darius Van Arman. They had called our bluff and then some. We had to pull together some of the best bands in the country that just weren’t getting represented properly. And fast…and that’s how Brah Records was born.
